What the E3D Brass Volcano Nozzle Does

The E3D Brass Volcano Nozzle for 1.75mm filament is a high-flow nozzle designed for Volcano HotEnds, helping users print larger layers at much higher material throughput than standard setups. It is built for stronger, faster, and bigger prints by pairing a wide nozzle format with the Volcano system’s extended melt zone.

Unlike standard nozzles intended for general-purpose printing, the Volcano nozzle range is made to support super-fine through super-fat layering within the Volcano ecosystem. The extra-long heated melt zone increases filament melt speed, while the internal geometry is shaped to optimise flow and throughput.

The nozzle tip geometry is also sized to flatten extra-wide printed traces properly, which is important when printing at high flow rates and large layer heights.

Key Features and Benefits of the Brass Volcano Nozzle

  • Designed for Volcano HotEnds: Made specifically for use with the Volcano block and packs.
  • High-flow printing performance: Supports extremely high flow rates for faster part production.
  • Large layer height capability: Suitable for printing thick layers that reduce total print time.
  • Extended melt zone: The extra-long heated zone helps increase filament melt speed for sustained throughput.
  • Optimised internal geometry: E3D engineered the internal shape to improve flow consistency and material throughput.
  • Wide trace support: The nozzle tip is proportioned to flatten wider extrusion paths effectively.
  • Nozzle identification system: E3D nozzles are marked by dots drilled into the hex flats for easy size identification.

General-Purpose and High-Speed Printing Use Cases

For general use, E3D notes that a 0.4mm nozzle has become an industry standard over the years, with the 0.4 to 0.6 range offering a practical balance between resolution and speed. E3D also finds that the V6 works best with a 0.4mm nozzle and 0.25mm layer heights, while the Volcano delivers very good results with a 0.6mm nozzle and 0.4mm layer heights.

For high-strength and high-speed printing, wider nozzles change both part structure and production time. A wider nozzle creates a wider extrusion track, and a wider track can produce stronger printed parts. Prints made with large nozzles of 0.8mm and above tend to show significantly greater strength than regular prints.

Thicker layers also reduce the total number of layers needed to complete a part, which can drastically shorten print times. If printing speed is the main priority, E3D recommends using the Volcano with 1.75mm filament because the lower cross-sectional area gives the filament a lower thermal mass, allowing it to heat more quickly in the melt zone.

Volcano systems commonly ship with a 0.8mm nozzle as standard and scale up to 1.2mm for very large, highly visible layers. At these larger sizes, the printed layer lines become more pronounced and can add a distinct visual character to finished parts.

This nozzle is also immediately compatible with the Lulzbot Moarstruder, and many RepRap 3D printers can be upgraded with an E3D Volcano setup. [[MEDIA_1]]
