Brass Volcano nozzle for high-flow, large-layer 3D printing

The E3D Brass Volcano Nozzle for 1.75mm filament is a high-performance nozzle built for Volcano HotEnds and high-throughput printing. It is designed to produce stronger, faster, and larger prints by supporting large layer heights, wide extrusion lines, and extremely high flow rates.

This Volcano brass nozzle is intended for use with the Volcano block and packs. Compared with standard nozzles, the Volcano format uses an extra-long heated melt zone to increase filament melt speed and help maintain flow during demanding prints.

Key features of the E3D Volcano brass nozzle

  • Built for high flow rates: Designed specifically for large layer heights and fast material output.
  • Extra-long heated melt zone: Supports ultimate filament melt speeds for faster printing performance.
  • Optimized internal geometry: E3D crafted the internal shape to improve flow and throughput.
  • Nozzle tip shaped for wide traces: The tip is appropriately sized for flattening down extra-wide printed lines.
  • Brass construction: Suitable for standard printing applications where good thermal performance is needed.
  • Easy nozzle identification: E3D nozzles are identified by the number of dots drilled into the nozzle hex flats.

General-use nozzle guidance for Volcano printing

The 0.4mm to 0.6mm range has become an industry-standard choice for general-purpose printing. A 0.4mm nozzle offers a balanced compromise between resolution and print speed.

E3D notes that the V6 works best with a 0.4mm nozzle and 0.25mm layer heights, while the Volcano achieves very good results with a 0.6mm nozzle and 0.4mm layer heights. That guidance helps position the Volcano as a strong option when thicker layers and higher throughput are the goal.

Why larger Volcano nozzles improve speed and part strength

Wider nozzles lay down wider tracks, and wider tracks can produce stronger parts. According to the original guidance, prints made with large nozzles of 0.8mm and above tend to have incredible strength compared to regular prints.

A wide nozzle also makes it possible to print much thicker layers, which can drastically reduce total print time. Volcano systems commonly ship with a 0.8mm nozzle as standard and extend up to 1.2mm for very large, highly visible layers with a distinct printed texture.

When to use 1.75mm filament with a Volcano nozzle

If print speed is the top priority, E3D recommends using the Volcano with 1.75mm filament. The lower cross-sectional area gives the filament lower thermal mass, which helps it heat more quickly in the melt zone.

That advantage supports faster extrusion, although overall performance still depends on whether the extruder can keep up with the required material feed rate.

Use cases for a 1.0mm Volcano nozzle

  • Fast functional prototyping: Reduce print time by using thicker layers and higher material throughput.
  • Large-format part production: Print bigger parts more efficiently with wide extrusion widths.
  • Strong mechanical components: Use wider printed tracks where part strength is more important than fine surface detail.
  • Visible-layer aesthetic prints: Create parts with a bold layered appearance that larger Volcano nozzles can produce.
